What Mountian Hardwear/Montrail gear and clothing is in your quiver for a typical day at/ on the trail?
My body is adorned, depending on terrain, usually with Rogue Racers or Mountain Masochists, Pacer Advance Shorts, Malina Tank, arm sleeves, Momentum Running Gloves (since I have Raynoids I wear these almost all year round!), Ghost Whisper Anorak and always a Mountain Hardwear beanie. I often carry a handheld and wear a small pack, yet if it’s cold when I start and warm later-I stuff unneeded hat and gloves and yes, sometimes even the GW jacket into the sports bra part of the tank…makes for a pretty interesting photo op!
How were you introduced to your sport?
In late 2002 some friends knew I liked trail running and fast packing. Through them I learned about the Uwharrie 40miler. The longest I’d run prior to this was 24 miles in the woods. During this trail run I was given “permission” to walk the ups-I didn’t know I was allowed to as it was called a trail run. To make a long story short, I came in 2nd, met David Horton and ran my 2nd ultra a week later. I was quickly hooked!
What inspires you?
The freedom of the trails, feeling like a bird and flying! Wind, snow, rain, darkness and being alive! I am also impacted by the shared passion of ultrarunners.
Which athletes or other individuals have been your biggest source of inspiration?
Anne Riddle Lundblad, Meghan Arbogast, Bethany (Hunter) Patterson, my (deceased) twin sister Cheryl Bednosky.
What’s your favorite pre race meal?
With no doubt: coffee, banana, almond butter and homemade apple butter sandwich.
How do you balance your training schedule with your “real” job?
I treat both as equally important! This involves lots of advance planning and many mornings getting up at 4:30am. I plan most workouts 2-4 weeks in advance and have them written into my work calendar, and often leave work at student dismissal to work out and return a couple hours later to put in more desk time.
In 10 years I hope to be…
More “balanced” as a runner, professional, and in my personal relationships. I hope to be physically and mentally healthy and having progressed in my profession and either have, or be working on my doctorate in counselor education. “Serious flying freedom seeker promoting aliveness”
When singing karaoke, what song do you sing to bring down the house?
Memory from CATS
What music gets you fired up?
I love Broadway, “John Denver” style songs, and 80’s music all that has been remixed into techno dance music!
